Now that the football season has ended, Chelsea has quite the task on their hands, as they have four quality strikers on their team who are able to perform on the pitch whenever necessary. With a quadruple attack of Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka, Salomon Kalou, and Fernando Torres, Chelsea simply cannot consistently give quality minutes to all of the aforementioned strikers. Drogba and Anelka are the veterans of the four attackers, and could possible be shown the door this summer, during the transfer window. Fernando Torres is certainly a name to see on Chelsea’s roster for the next few years, especially after his €95m transfer to the club in January, which is currently the highest paid contract in club history.
Drogba and Anelka may be the senior strikers, but their effectivity cannot be brushed to the side. Didier Drogba seemed to be unaffected by age this past season, and is arguably a top 10 player in the world today. After winning both the League Cup and the FA Cup with Chelsea in 2007, Drogba has become a favorite with supporters, and had the veteran experience and leadership to direct the likes of Torres and Kalou. Nicolas Anelka is a lightning quick offensive player, and is known for his well poised World Cup performances with France, before he retired from international competition after last year’s World Cup in June. Anelka’s overwhelming speed and laser-like precision can give the best goalkeepers nightmares, and whenever he isn’t taking shots on goal, he also too great of a ball distributer to simply cast off from a team.
Age seems to be the major theme at Chelsea, because once they decide on what to do with their four world class goal scorers, the must decide what to do with their defense, which includes an aging John Terry, who could be considering retirement within the next few seasons. Chelsea is attempting to become a younger team, and their interest in young talent such as Romelu Lukaku, Luka Modric, and Neymar are citable pieces of evidence which support that theory. Chelsea will be an exciting team to watch this summer, as the transfer speculation continues on.
